I remember when I was reading one of my first science-fiction books, sometime in the 70's. Its title was "Prisoners of Power" by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky¹, a great duo of SF writers who were able to smuggle many ideas in their books right past the Soviet censorship in the years of Communism. From what I have heard, Western journalists were never allowed to interview them or contact them otherwise (thanks KGB!).

Now you may ask yourself, what in the world does that have to do with anything? Well, let me explain what this book is about. It is a story of a young cadet-astronaut who, on one of his reconnaissance flights, crashes on a planet inhabited by a civilization controlled by a totalitarian government. The elite class controls the society by means of tower-antennas emitting specially modulated electromagnetic radiation that makes most of the peoples' minds susceptible to the propaganda and mind control techniques. Not all people, though. A certain part of the society has quite a different reaction to the "prime-time" wave of radiation. What happens is that some, called in the book "degenerates," have horrible migraines during the maximum height of the radiation wave, while the rest of the nation sings patriotic songs and builds up hatred towards anything that goes against the politically correct propaganda of the "All-Powerful Creators."

    "I'm going to tell him," declared Zef, without asking for permission or consulting Vepr. Vepr remained silent and Zef began his story.
    What he described was incredible. Incredible in itself, incredible because it left no room for doubt. While Zef spoke, softly, calmly, in impeccably precise language, pausing politely when Vepr interjected brief remarks, Maxim strained hard to find a loophole in this new image of their world. But in vain. The picture was coherent, primitive, and hopelessly logical: it covered all the facts known to Maxim, leaving nothing unexplained. It was the most frightening discovery Maxim had made on his inhabited island.
    It was not for the degens that the towers had been designed. The radiation strikes affected the nervous system of every human being on the planet. The physiological mechanism was unknown, but, in essence, the brain of an individual exposed to radiation lost its capacity to analyze reality critically. Thinking man was transformed into believing man, into one who believed rabidly, fanatically, despite the evidence of his own eyes. The most elementary propaganda techniques could convince anyone inside the radiation field of anything: he would lovingly accept whatever was presented as the shining truth, the only truth, a truth for which he would gladly live, suffer, and die.

As a side note, this book came out about the time that the US Embassy in Moscow was bombarded with electromagnetic radiation. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but just thought to throw it in here.

When I read the book, I realized that this kind of political and social system is not only possible, but is the reality of the world of Communism; with all of the idiocy of its bureaucracy and the iron grip of the Communistic governments on the people of China, Russia, Eastern Europe, Cuba and elsewhere. What was kind of out of place in this story was the physical and technological means of controlling people's minds described in the book. I was convinced that it would be quite impossible to devise this kind of technology that could affect the subjects' minds and open them to the propaganda and brainwashing.

Well, years ago, we all heard about the subliminal messages, and such. But what about other methods of controlling of human brain, human mind? There's the one called simply Mind-Control, which is conditioning of one's brain through some sort of trauma. It requires some "prep work", though. This is certainly of some interest to the governments, and you can learn about it from some books on this subject. And one of the more prominent documents out there in this area is "TRANCE Formation of America" by Cathy O'Brien and Mark Phillips. I heard them interviewed by Dr. Stan Monteith on Radio Liberty, and Mark alone on other occasions.²

Are there any other ways of gaining control over one's mind? From all I have heard and read, I have to say that I believe so!

Are there ways of inducing certain states of mind in humans by technological, electrical, remote means to produce a state of euphoria, ecstasy, depression, sickness, illness, mental disorder, submissiveness, fear, anger, aggression, etc.?

We truly live in the Brave New World, don't we? Is all this technology going to be used for our good? I have serious doubts. Has it been in the past? Well, think about all the "research" done by German scientists during the war. I can already hear all the voices of honest, though uninformed, people who will say that, surely, nowadays we have certain standards, etc. The question is, do we?
